I wrote this post on UXPlanet. It addresses what I see as the growing belief that UX is about making things look nice and trying to bedazzle users with transitions. The truth is that people are generally just trying to get stuff done when the use technology. If your thing allows them to do something they are struggling with then it can often get away with being quite ugly in fact.
